Orwell Panthers Management Committee Report 2008

The progress of Orwell Panthers A. C. continues healthily. Our membership now stands at 100 of which 44 are athletes. This represents a slight decrease on last year apposition that we must monitor carefully. Last year I reported that we cannot afford to rest on our laurels and we need to continue to develop the skills of our existing team whilst always looking for more people to become coaches and helpers. Please be assured that the benefits to the athletes and their families of what is done at Orwell Panthers, are amazing.

We need new ideas and transfusions of enthusiasm and that can only come from you. Please believe that you have much to offer and the athletes need you.

Competition:

Once again we played a major role in the Suffolk Sportshall League and were a shining beacon for inclusivity with our members competing very well with all the others in the competition. The cross country League was well attended again with all participants doing well and gaining valuable experience. The Panthers vest is now being recognized across the County. At Royal Hospital School in January, seven brave Panthers took on the might of the County in the County Cross Country Championships and were a credit to themselves and to their families and to their club.

In Track & Field several of our members contested the County Championships at Northgate in early May with the Davis boys each becoming County Champion over 400m Hurdles in their appropriate age group.

The next week we took a strong team to Cambridge to contest the DSE Eastern Region Championships. We had some outstanding performances which ultimately led to four of our members being selected to represent the East in the National Championships in July at Blackpool . All four acquitted themselves brilliantly but it was Emma who stole the show by becoming the Under 13 Girl 1500m, National Champion. The Panther Challenge in July saw our biggest entry and a really super day of athletics splendidly supported by John Grose and by Vistorm. Orwell Panthers A Team defended their 2007 trophy and the Blue team took the fun event. Prizes were presented by Zoe Robinson who later went on to win a Gold Medal at the Beijing Paralympics for Boccia.

At the end of the year four panthers were invited to run as guests at the Special Olympics Eastern championships at Ware in which all four performed magnificently and clearly showed that belonging to Panthers is an advantage both in terms of training but also in their superb discipline.

Social:

The Social Committee has once more been absolutely fabulous with all the events they have ruin and the amount of income they have generated. The Panthers thank all who have been involved in the social side of the club and think you are an amazing group of people.

Awards:

Once again awards came our way with the highest honour going to Lis as “Newcomer to Officiating” presented by England Athletics East.

Development:

Coaches and Officials have continued to work hard to develop their skills and improve their grading. We believe that the club is moving towards being the best qualified athletics club in the area.

Profile:

The club is becoming known across the world through word of mouth and through access to our web site: www.orwellpanthers.co.uk

Records show that we have had people from all over America , Australia , Europe, Africa and Asia . Sorry but no record of a viewer in Antarctica , yet. We have had more than 5000 different people logging on to our site. We also get regular coverage in Grass Roots in the local press.

Sponsorship:

The treasurer will report that we have continue to receive great support from the community around us and how our bank balance is healthy. Lots of people have worked hard to encourage sponsorship but special thanks to Ann for her amazing work in this area.

I continue to be proud to have been your Chairman over the past year and am eternally grateful to everyone who is involved in any way with Orwell Panthers A. C. Thank you one and all.

Before we end another great year it was with great excitement that we suggested to Team Ipswich that we could provide the Borough with a suitable handover ceremony as London received the Paralympic flag for 2012 and even more excitement when they took up our offer. Wow! How we showed them, just what a power Orwell Panthers can be and how we attracted so many different sports people. If you were involved in that, then puff out your chest with pride. There will be much to do to make 2012 successful but I believe that Orwell Panthers can play a big part in the build up and maybe even get an athlete or two to compete.
