County Cross Country Championships

"I DID IT FOR JERRY"

The words uttered by Matthew as he completed a very gruelling 4,000 metres of Haughley Park in the Suffolk County Athletic Association 2009 Under 15 Boys Cross Country Championship. 

It was a cold start but dry as the athletes gathered at Haughley Park Nr Stowmarket for the county cross country championships. Panthers were two fewer than last year and Emma and Kieron were greatly missed.

Matthew was first away and showed his usual tenacity and despite finding both the course and the opposition extremely tough, he battled on and sprinted hard at the finish. As he crossed the line Matthew remembered the sad loss to our coaching team of Jerry Everett and announced to all at the finish that he had run today for Jerry.

We then had the massed ranks of the Senior Men and Under 20 men starting together. The senior men had to race over 12,000 metres and the Under 20 men over 8,000 metres. In with the county's elite athletes were Stephen and Michael who were competing in the Under 20 group. Both acquitted themselves well  and pleased the onlookers by both having storming finishes.

Olly and Lee rejoined their battle for supremacy in the Under 17 Men's race. It was a tough job against some of the best athletes in the Country. The race was won by Shaun Webb who last year was the 2008 National Cross Country Under 15 Champion. Understandably the race began at a fast pace and our two Panthers set off perhaps a little too quickly. They recovered their composure, however, and both finished well. It was pleasing to see Shaun waiting to congratulate the two Panthers as they crossed the finish line. The mark of a true champion.
