The first East Awards Evening was held at Homerton College Cambridge. Attended by 135 people, guests were entertained by guest speakers Derek Redmond, Danny Crates and Chair Of England Athletics John Graves.

The evening was a celebration of the significant achievements of many volunteers involved in making the sport tick in the east.

Chris Jones, Regional Manager for England Athletics East acknowledged the evenings importance by declaring "This is amongst the most important things that we will organise as a team. We were delighted with the response to the nomination process. Without such volunteers who give up their own time for the benefit of others, the sport would cease to function as we recognise it. Years of experience and commitment continues to impact upon young people coming into the sport, inspiring others to follow suit. In particular it was pleasing to see diehard enthusiasts such as Dave Rice, Keith Waite, Keith Flint and Margaret Powell recognised for their contributions to athletics in the east region. It was also pleasing to see some newcomers acknowledged for their efforts through this process. In particular it is important we locate and develop new officials into the sport and people like Matt Witt (Newcomer to officiating) are inspirational to others who may wish to give this a try. We plan to repeat this event in 2008."
