Sandra Cheatham 1949 - 2004

It was with sadness that I received Ian Byett's email last
Friday morning informing me of the death of Sandra Cheatham. Although we new she
had been unwell for some weeks I don't think until the last week that many of us
realised how ill Sandra had been.
I got to know Sandra through my North of England Cross Country Team Managers
duties back in the early 90s. Sandra who was already by then an established
South of England Team Manager, and I remember she was very helpful to me as a
new member of the Team Management on the early trips abroad with the Northern
Teams.
On our winter trips to Ghent and Brussels, our coach would call in at South
Mimms services on the M25, this would be early Saturday afternoon where Sandra
would be waiting to join the coach with the Southern Team, and her infectious
smile. Over the years, and on numerous trips abroad I got to know Sandra and
value her as she was an ever present member of the Team never missing an event.
It was not only on the country that you would come across Sandra, the track
& field season was just as busy for her and Tony. I would see her at the
inter area match or other major events held in the South of England. I never
knew how she managed to find time to visit her caravan which she often spoke
about. I last spoke to Sandra in August when I was looking for results from a
fixture held in the South and as usual Sandra was able to put me on to the
results in an instance. Sandra will be missed by
all who had the privilege to know her.
